Security between 7.3 & 8

I'm implementing a replicated database on Oracle 8 - replicating from a 7.3.4 installation. We would like to encrypt the transmission between the two databases to reduce our risk, but don't know if Oracle's encryption will be supported on both ends. If it is, how difficult is it to implement? Will an older version of the server require purchased additions to accomplish it?
