This can be slow. It is much quicker to copy the files.

If the files are copied to locations with different paths you will need to recreate your control file (with changed path of course) before you will be able to start the database.

Use the alter database rename datafile before you move the files.

Yes, there several steps not mentioned.

Might be worth dumping it to trace before you get rid of the existing instance.
