Currently we are running a 7.1.6.2 database on one DEC Unix v4 machine and I have just installed a 7.3.3 database on another DEC box. Installation of 7.3.3 database was fairly easy with one patch obtained from Oracle taking the database to 7.3.3.3. I've just copied all the backup scripts across and with a little tweaking backup scripts now appear to be working fine. My last job is to export the database from the 7.1.6.2 database and import it into the 7.3.3.3 database. I hope this will be problem free. Biggest problem will most likely be moving all the developers across to the new db (ungrateful mob that they are).

Problems I had with 7.3.3.3 install were: 1) First installation failed because I didn't have the X motif libraries installed under /usr/lib (I think that was the directory). 2) Once installed running sqlplus username/password worked fine, but using sqlplus username/password_at_oracle_sid resulted in an TNS error. According to Oracle this is known bug which has yet to be fixed. Oracle has a workaround which you can place in your sqlnet.ora. Unfortunately the workaround makes it impossible for a connect internal into server manager and therefore you can't shutdown and startup your database for backups (doh!).

Sorry, can't give you patch numbers or bug numbers from Oracle cause I'm writing this from home. If your really desparate for them either email during business week where I can give you more help or drop Oracle support a line.

Hope this is useful.
