Hi Peter,
I have had exactly the same problem as you about a year ago, my memory is a little fuzzy now, but I seem to remember having the same "it doesn't make sense" thought processes as you are having now.
As I recall, SHLIB_PATH did fix it. If not, let me know, its easy enough for me to try here. (Except we are on oracle 8 now). I agree that it is poor behavoir to core dump just because the environment is incorrect but there ya go. Steve

also try the following:
chatr -l $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.sl +s enable +b disable <your_prog>
