Migration basics

I have to upgrade a 7.1 database to 7.3.
Would anyone have any tips/insights/advise regarding this process.
What tool(s) should I use? How does one install the new version on a
remote host? 


Please inform me also of any pitfalls you're aware of in
migrations/upgrades.
