Andy, I managed to find some information regarding your query in the Oracle 8 documentation.
It goes as follows . . .
"You can immediately shut down the Oracle8 database by stopping the service OracleServiceORCL. This automated procedure is equivalent to manually entering the following two commands:
C:\> SVRMGR30
SVRMGR> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
This causes the database to terminate and roll back active
transactions, disconnect clients, and shut down."
