For most sites either way will work fine. There are some performance benefits to raw partitions, but there are some administration issues with raw partitions. I personally think people blow the administration issues all out of proportion. Our site has found raw partitions to be no administration problem whatsoever, but we generally dedicate entire disks to Oracle. Some older Unix disk management software only allowed partitions of specific sizes to be built at specific locations on the disk, but most modern system use a form of logical file system that allows raw partitions of any size to located anywhere.

If your system is pure OLTP then changing to raw partitions will probably not result in any noticable change in performance; however, if your applications have a lot of batch jobs and you are not using OS level stripping then you will probaby see a performance gain for these jobs. There are a lot of variables that affect system level performance (Number of cpu's, disks, etc...)

Parallel Server (not query) requires the use of raw partitions.
