One thing I would do would be to first eliminate any possibility of this being caused by latency in your network.

If your network protocol is TCP/IP, and you reference your server by hostname (e.g., HOST = bigserver), change this entry to the server's actual IP address, thus eliminating any lookup from a hosts file or DNS. This may not be the cause of your delay, but this is at least where I would start.
