From a performance point of view, I believe it is still the best option. Make sure you are using other platform-specific I/O tweaks as well - eg async I/O, list I/O, post-wait drivers etc where available.

Good disk management software (eg a Volume Manager package) means that you
can create/resize/delete raw partitions without having to reformat your disk.
This removes most of the problems associated with managing raw disk.
