install oracle 11g and oracle 11g client on the same machine

Hi,

I have oracle 11g database and PHP application on my machine(A). One of my PHP orogram need to connect to oracle 9g DB on a machine(B). Do I need to install oracle client on machine(A) and which version do I need to install?
