Sorry for a vague reply, but it's been a while since I've had to deal with windows. But the term MTU seems to be dimly lighting some bulbs over my head, so see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q140375/
and search metalink on:
network sqlnet MTU
(as well as the notes for sqlnet tracing, and the docs for trcasst).
My vague memory is there was some mismatch in the defaults of how big the packets were so I needed to tell one of the machines to use larger packets and not believe the discovery of maximum size, or something like that.
