howard,
First I installed the actual RHEL ES3.0 not WB.
re the .bashrc vs .bash_profile "issue"
NO, didn't mess with default.
it is POSSIBLE that I did not EXPORT the variables.
I agress there is no reason .bashrc doesn't work.
(I complained about .bashrc in the original msg because
every doc, Oracle or Linux, I read out there put env variables in
.bash_profile)
ok so I put back everything I deleted & installer go from there. I actually let installer create a starter DB. (which you opted *not* to do in your doc) all is well.
But I got problem right from the get-go, problem that I have NOT had before with 10g/RH9 9i/RH8
when I do "startup"
sqlplus tells me it can not find initmy10g.ora
so I cp init.ora initmy10g.ora.
It complains about insufficient memory or something.
Mind you I did config "/etc/sysctl.conf" as per doc.
Anyway I am looking to scratching the whole thing and re-install.
do you think the fact I have installer create DB is the cause of the problem ? or is it VMWare ?
thanks
robert
