Possibly because a significant percentage of the people asking questions fall into one or more of the following categories

  1. They are unwilling to read the manual (or any book for that matter);
  2. They assuming Oracle is the same as other RDBMSs and must behave the same;
  3. They are unwilling to provide the sufficient environment information or background, but still expect respondents to respond accurately;
  4. They are unwilling to accept that there are several ways of accomplishing similar tasks, and unwilling to accept that choosing the correct technique requires further information;
  5. They, or their organization, are too cheap/reluctant/stupid/other to get a supported version (and support and metalink access) and expect the newsgroup attendees to provide such information for free;
  6. They filter supporting information under the assumption that it is 'irrelevant' (ref #3, #4);
  7. They are unwilling to explain why the urgency or technique has been chosen;
  8. They are unwilling to listen (which can be mutual);
  9. They are unwilling to experiment.

While I frequently cringe at his choice of language, I find many of Sybrand's harsh posts are directed at people who fall into one or more of the above. Like it or not, IMO it does serve a purpose.

(You *did* ask ....)
