Don't take that too hard. Often that type of approach is used to see how well the person can handle pressure and how he acts under it.

What I look for a guy in an interview is basically two thing. The ability to solve problems. The ability to learn on his feet. You can take a guy like that and throw into the deepend of the PL/SQL pool (or most any other pool) and he will not only be able to tread water, but will soon be swimming around pretty darn well.

Those skills are not really obtained from book learning. Though RTFM'ing ability makes up a big portion of that skill.

IOW. Rather a guy who you can trust to find the knowledge, than a guy who thinks he has the knowledge.

In my experience, you will find the latter especially among Java programmers. ;-)
