Well, export is only a logical backup. It's not the hot backup. Export is good in a way when you accidentally drop your tables etc. You should do both the hot backup and export. You can either use RMAN or alter tablespace begin/end backup to do hot backup.
HJR used to have a good site where I can point people to. Not anymore.
