ORA-03113 : end of file on communication channel ...

Hi,
While trying to use sqlplus I am getting following error:

# sqlplus system/manager

SQL*Plus: Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production on Thu Nov 8 11:43:31 2001 (c) Copyright 2000 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. ERROR:
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel ........
There are also errors in alert.log file - ORA-07445 ... The problem started after instance was shutdown and restarted..

The error in alert.log file :

ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [lxdgetobj()+60] [SIGBUS] [Invalid address alignment] [1835627467] [] []

This is a new installation and nothing was changed to my knowledge from the last time when we
rebooted database. There was only data entered and additional tablespace created by application consultant (new payroll system..)

We can connect remotely (SQLPlus from WNT).
