Have Oracle 8 running happily on an NT box. Attempted installation of Enterprise Manager. To my surprise (new here) the install insisted upon a new home being created. Under the advise I got here I pointed to a new directory and gave a new home name. Install went OK untill I mistyped the service name. NT then crashed; more to my interest was that upon rebooting SQL plus would not boot . I uninstalled EM and the server; have reinstalled the server and have SQL plus back. I see I need better docs on what is really an OS of sorts - Keven Loney's book is fine,(thanks to those who suggested it) but not , I think, for this level of troubleshooting.

  1. how do I safely install EM ? How do I refer to the service correctly ? what are the considerations of new homes and their directories ?
  2. what's a good book for system troubleshooting ?
