UNC using UTL_FILE

I am wondering if it is possible to use Universal Naming Convention with the UTL_FILE package?

In particular, I would like to be able to have a line like the following in my init<db>.ora file:

utl_file_dir = \\servername\share\dir1\subdir

I have not been able to get that to work.

utl_file_dir = c:\dir1\subdir

works fine though. I have not been able to locate any documentation that specifically says that UNCs will not work. I know for a fact that Oracle does allow the use of UNCs in other areas. We are using Oracle Server 8.0.6. for NT.
