default values

I need help with setting a default value of a blank space for a number of columns in tables I am creating. The client wishes the default value to be ' '. He does not want a null value entered. Designer Help says to insert a blank space between single quotes; however the result is ' ' which is not what I want. Please tell me how to do this, if it can be done. Thanks.
