Big searches via CGI?

I was trying to figure out how a place like Yahoo does its searches? Being that it is through CGI scripts, you can't just open a cursor and return 20 search results at a time... as when I hit the 'Next 20' link, I will probably be contacting a completely different web server.

Does Yahoo just re-execute the whole query every time, but returns only the "window" of matches it needs to?
