Encrypting data

I am wondering if people have any idea how companies like Amazon and Ebay store user passwords? Do they store them as plain text in the database, or are they encrypted? I would like to store the password as a MD5 hash or something, but I will need the ability to mail the plain-text password to the user in case they forgot it. So, I'm wondering if there is something in Oracle that will allow me to store passwords with more security than just having them in plain text?
