Sounds like somewhere I used to work, including "cannot begin to look at any
application for 12-18 mnths". As I understand it, Oracle still needs a
'front-end' reporter tool and the IT Department were wanting everything
developed by them in Powerbuilder.
Fortunately we were able to hold on to our Access, which is easy enough for average PC users to learn and be able to use to query and report Oracle data, on an "individual needs" basis, as and when required. With correct read/write privileges in place users were able to safely access data from Oracle via Access.
From the perspective of an IT Department, I can understand the "nightmare" of trying to maintain/support a myriad of Access databases developed by often inexperienced users. But surely with the development of correct procedures etc, the needs of both the users and the IT Department can be met.
Hold on to Access.

| My users can manage and manipulate their data fairly well in Access (with
| Excel).
|
| However, the Oracle-based IT people are campaigning for a ban on the use
| of Access by users (mainly knowledge workers), instead they want the
| users to engage the Oracle team in building their 'applications' in
| Oracle - whilst at the same time saying that they cannot begin to look at
| any application for 12-18 mths!
|
| My question is, how easy would it be for users to manipulate their data
| in Oracle instead of Access? Can they do that without reference to the
| Oracle team?
|
| Any insight will be very useful. Thanks.
