sqlplus -- synchronous/asynchronous problem

On one PC (win 98, oracle 7.1.4) typing sqlplus from a dos window launches a second dos window that runs plus33 while the original dos window immediately returns to the dos prompt.

On a second PC (win 98, same oracle version), typing sqlplus from a dos window does the same thing EXCEPT that the original dos window waits for the sqlplus process to be closed before it returns to the dos prompt.

(In both cases, the PLUS_DFLT registry entry is set to run plusXX, not plusXXw)

Sqlplus is asynchronous on one pc and synchronous on the other (and on all other pcs I've tried using various operating systems and versions of oracle) sqlplus is synchronous.

What could account for this? I really want it to be synchronous everywhere?

Thanks to any who respond.
