Jerry,

We tried using the audit method you mentioned on an HP 9000 with 2G of RAM and 50-200 concurrent users. We then tried using the application to grab the v$session data and store it into our own table when the app was launched and this worked much better. Sure the app took a few milliseconds longer to launch but system response time was about 40% faster and the Unix sys admins stopped bugging us about "hurting" their CPUs. :)
