Firstly let me clarify that in my replies to Joe, I meant creating a new "database", not a new "instance" to an already-existing database.

There could be several reasons for creating a new database instance. eg : In my company, three projects share the same machine - each needing a separate, unrelated database. In such a case, we went for creating three separate databases (instead of three unrelated users in a single database).

If you want to have >1 instance accessing the same database, then you mustgo for Oracle Parallel Server.
