pro*c core dumps over syntax errors?

I'm using Pro*C for the first time and I find that it core dumps (segment faults) over the smallest syntax errors. Missing semicolons, extra or missing parenthesis, undefined symbols. Any one of these causes a core dump without a clue as to the offending line. No ".c" file. Is this behavior the norm for this product? Is there a problem with my installation? How can anyone get thru a development cycle with this thing?
