I believe the original question dealt with whether to put the db in archive log mode or not to do a backup. My response was meant to say that if the database is up and running, you have to be in archive log mode to do 'hot' backups. A 'cold' backup of a running database is unreliable, if your os will even let you do it.

For a cold backup to be valid, the db/instance must be down. As such, whether it is in archive log mode or not is not a factor.

I am a strong believer in archive logging for point-in-time and automatic instance recovery. Particularly for db's that can't be backed up cold nightly. It was not the issue I was addressing.
