RMAN query

I am trying to get the heng of rman.
I have the catalog in rman in the same database as the target.

I connect to rman as

rman rcvcat rman/rman

connect target;

If I then try to run a script it always comes up with the error:
RMAN-20001 "target database is not in the recovery catalog",

so i repeat the task of registering the database and it says :
RMAN-20002 "target database already registered in recovery database".

How can it be not in the catalog and in the catalog at the same time?

please shine a light on this problem
