Dimensional modeling is quite different than relational modeling. Relational modeling is the traditional building of database objects into relations in 3rd normal form. Dimensional modeling places objects into dimensions made up of central fact tables and somewhat denormalized data tables. To learn Dimensional modeling, pick up a couple of books by Ralph Kimball.
