HELP: Virtual memory error when installing P08 on windows 95 OSR2

I have recently installed a later version of Windows 95 (OSR2) on to my PC. This involved removing my old version of Windows 95 (v4.00.950) and installing from an OEM CD my new version (v4.00.950B).

Prior to the reinstal of Windows 95 my Oracle 8.0.4 worked perfectly as did all the Oracle tools.

As a result of the instal when I attempt to install Personal Oracle 8 I get the following information message when Oracle Installer attempts to initialize the Starter Database:

There was an error in initializing the Starter Database. This error is most likely caused by a lack in virtual memory of your operating system. Please increase your winows virtual memory in Control Panel->System->Performance->Virtual Memory.

The install then goes on to complete successfully. However, when I attempt to start the database I get the following error:

ORA-1019 Can not attach to Oracle8

I assume the two errors are related. I have no problems with any other software on my PC which has been reinstalled since the update of Windows 95, even the Oracle tools work providing I do not connect to the database (as the database is not running).

My PC has 80M Ram and the C drive (on which Windows is installed) has more than 500Mb of spare space.

My Virtual Memory settings are such that Windows will manage the virtual memory (the standard setting). I did try changing this but it made no difference.

Obviously, the installation of the new version of Windows 95 has affected something which causes the database not to run. Since this is a much later (and better!) version of Windows 95 this is somewhat surprising.

Help. Any pointers/ideas as to what has happed to stop Oracle working would be appreciated.

Regards.

Paul
