I just recently took a job as a WebMaster and have decided to run Oracle as the DB.

Our projections are: 5 million entries in the DB, possibly more. The Database will be queried approx. 2 million times a month. Most queries will be generated by our ad management software

My Client wants to get the latest and greatest so we are probably going with 8i. I noticed that Oracle likes to develop on the Sun Sparc Solaris platform, so that will probably the platform we will go with.

What I need to know is:

What Oracle programs will I need?
Oracle Server for sure... but do I need the Enterprise Edition?     Do I need Oracle Application Server? Or any of the other programs Oracle offers?

How "large" of a machine do we need to run Oracle, given the general specs.

I classify myself as a Pre-Newbie having never played with the software and just purchased my first book. I plan on taking extensive courses real soon to get all the ins and outs...
but for now, so we can get the purchasing process underway, a few pointers would really help out.

Your feedback is very much appreciated, Donald Received on Fri Mar 05 1999 - 21:02:13 CST
