                           OVERVIEW

Software development is rapidly moving toward the component-design paradigm. And because the manner by which systems are built is changing, it will be necessary to have the appropriate testing methodologies and tools that complement these changes. Because of this, the theme of the TCS'99 is "Future Trends in Testing." The goal of the 1999 Conference will be to explore which testing technologies we will need to take into the new millennium and which ones we will not. Further, we will explore the testing problems that accompany component-based design and what research is needed to address these deficiencies.

TCS'99 is changing the submission procedures for those professionals who wish to publish papers that are presented in the Advanced Topics Track. Beginning with the 1999 Conference, TCS will employ a formal review process by committee for full and short length paper submissions. Previous TCS Conferences have not required paper submissions for inclusion in this track. However, to continue to increase the quality of the information provided to the attendees, TCS'99 has decided to employ a standard peer review committee to encourage state-of-the-art submissions.

Topics of particular interest to the Program Committee for TCS'99 include:

Empirical results from testing large-scale systems
Java testing methodologies
Software assertions
Joint testing/formal methods approaches
Analysis of situations where testing failed to provide expected benefits
Object-oriented testing
Empirical results gained during Y2K testing
Distributed system testing
Real-time system testing
Embedded system testing
Slicing Object-Oriented programs
Dataflow algorithms
Software Metrics and Measurement
Software testing standards
Software Reliability Measurement
Software Safety Assessment
Software Security Assessment
Testing Mobile Code and Agents
Testing Web-based systems
Testing COTS-based systems

However, any other topics related to the Conference theme or to advances in software testing are always encouraged. Note also that there are other tracks at TCS'99 that do not employ this submission procedure and which do encourage presentations on other topics in software testing.                   INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Submissions to be included in the Advanced Topics Track of the TCS'99 program are now being accepted by the TCS'99 Program Committee. Send six copies of your Paper to Jeffrey Voas, Advanced Topics Track Chair, at the address given below. Papers must be received by November 1, 1998. Full-length papers, which should include an abstract, must not exceed 6,000 words. Full-length papers should provide state-of-the-art information addressing the topics listed above or related topics. Short papers can also be submitted. Short papers are desirable for "work in progress" or preliminary ideas with early results. Short papers should not exceed 2,500 words. Both full-length papers and short papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings.

In addition to a paper submission, an ASCII copy of the paper title and abstract should be sent to Jeff Voas (jmvoas_at_rstcorp.com) by electronic mail. Abstracts will be distributed electronically to the entire program committee to aid in the appropriate assignment of referees. Authors must certify in their cover letter prior to November 1, 1998 that any and all necessary clearances for publication have been obtained. Authors will be notified of paper acceptance by February 1, 1999. Camera-ready copies of papers and viewgraph slides are due no later than April 1, 1999.
