Hi John,
The strategy you should follow is dependent on how quickly you have to get Oracle 8 up and running. Since you are talking about installing as opposed to upgrading I am assuming you plan on doing a new install. Regardless of whether or not you have the time to do so Read The Fine Manual. You will find everything you need to know in the Oracle Installation Guide that came with the software. Just start at the beginning and read it all of the way through. Then go back and to the beginning and write up a step by step procedure (including those items which are to be performed by root).
There are two major issues that you should resolve before you start. The first is whether you want the installer to generate the default database or should create your own custom database. If you decide to create a custom database just get a copy of Kevin Loney's Oracle Press book "Oracle DBA Handbook ", published by Osborne McGraw-Hill and use the database creation script in the book as a model.
The second major issue is whether to use raw files or the unix file system. (Note: that if you are installing Parallel Server this is not an issue since you must use raw files.) You have the potential of getting better performance using raw files at the expense of more administrative effort. There are two schools of thought here; the "Let's throw more hardware at the problem" school which prefers to use the Unix file system and the "Let's get the most bang for the buck" school which prefers raw files. Pick whichever is most appropriate for the applications you are planning.
Don't worry about optimizing the location of the various files since you, or your systems administrator, can move them around and then create symbolic links for the RDBMS to use.
The best thing to do at this point is just do the install. If you have any problems don't hesitate to use Oracle Tech Support (I presume you have a support contract). Remember that after you get it installed you can always uninstall and try again.
regards
Jerry
