Connection Paramter for changing date format?

Hi,

        I would like to change the date format in oracle to mm/dd/yyyy. I've tried using alter session nls_date format. It works inside sqlplus. However it doesn't seem to work in the ODBC test tool. Is there a connection string I can use to do this?
