It won't be released until 2017. Once released, it will most likely be a limited product compared to their Windows offerings. It will likely take a couple of releases until it's really on par with what is on Windows, and by that time it will probably be 2020? Who knows what the landscape will look like then.

It will help SQL Server sales in that they can say they will run on Linux and Windows. Benefits sales and marketing more than anything else. It makes Microsoft look more open and attractive. Judson Althoff, an ex-Oracle veteran and now Microsoft VP of North America, likely had a lot to do with steering Microsoft in this direction.

For those saying Oracle may have to change their business model (pricing) to compete. Remember this, Microsoft has been changing their's more to match Oracle. SQL Server pricing has been going up quite a bit as of late and I believe they still charge for upgrades? Rather than Oracle having to move to SQL Server's space, it looks like SQL Server has decided moving to where Oracle is, is a much more attractive option.
