Debugging a failing trigger

This is Oracle 11.2.0.4 on Red Hat Linux 6.6.

We have a trigger which is failing and the application, Costpoint 7.1, is returning ora-4088 and ora-6512 plus line numbers in the trigger code. How can I force Oracle to dump a trace file to show me the rest of the error stack?

I tried "alter system set event=ora-4088 scope = spfile" followed by a restart, but the error does not produce a trace.

What am I missing?
