Theoretically you can attack diagnosing problems at varying levels of impact ... theoretically.
Practically speaking you often need to run higher impact diagnostics otherwise Oracle support may tell you "sorry I did not see what I needed to see in what you provided".
My worst case experience we had multiple hangs over multiple times and gathered exactly what Oracle support asked for and they still could not help.
Tanel Poder however solved it almost right away ( but experts at his level not readily available all the time unfortunately ).
It did give me material for my Hotsos 2013 presentation "OS Truth, Little White Lies, and the Oracle Wait Interface" however.
