the answer is pretty complicated
as someone Who heavily invested in database appliances I've found the use cases to be very convincing but I was facing a set of challenges that might have been different from other people on the list in terms of provisioning and ease of deployment we have found appliances to very helpful in that aspect and have decreased our time to deployment significantly
