Christopher, what is your oracle version? On 11.2.0.1 "_serial_direct_read" was boolean parameter, besides this, there are other version-dependent conditions: http://blog.tanelpoder.com/2012/09/03/optimizer-statistics-driven-direct-path-read-decision-for-full-table-scans-_direct_read_decision_statistics_driven/
