+1 for Nexus 7. Good size, relatively cheap, good battery life (although 9-10 hours not weeks like a kindle), and much more versatile than a dedicated e-reader. If your books have any type of diagrams or images it's a much simpler decision. Even though your primary requirement is for an e-reader, I'm sure you will find other uses for a small tablet like a N7 or iPad mini. I wouldn't go with one of the larger tablets. They are too heavy to be comfortably used for reading a book over a long period (e.g. on a long plane trip).
