Gather statistics in Oracle 10g and higher database

Until Oracle 9i I have used dbms_stats package to generate statistics. But I heard that we don't need to generate the statistics manually since it is done automatically. Could anyone describe how the statistics is generated in Oracle 10g database automatically?
