I'm a long-standing Perl fan, but I think I'm coming to the conclusion that Python is a much more elegant language. Perl still has the edge as far as pre-built modules to do various tasks, but Python is clean, readable, and pretty easy to learn. Codeacademy.com has some good lessons on Python, certainly enough to get started.
