Thanks Jeff, but that was the first thing I tried. The next thing was the .conf edit from Kris Rice's blog. Neither appear to have any effect on SQL Dev 3 running on XP with Cleartype enabled. In 11pt Consolas a bold 'm' is a solid rectangle.

Tools > Preferences > Code Editor > Display > Enable Text Anti-Aliasing
We're going to make that the default selection going forward.
