For years I've been using OpenFiler on a homebrew box (GB RAM, Intel Core2Duo) as my NAS. Nice, simple, stripped down Linux appliance that serves my needs, is open source, and is supportable. Use that to support my OracleVM and RAC lab and demo boxes. The OracleVM (based on XEN, and also free, downloaded from Oracle) runs on Dell Precision 490s and T5500s, which can be picked up at a pretty reasonable price, and it's all connected using Intel dual or quad GB Nics and 2xLinksys SRW2024 GB switches.
For GIS, Oracle Locator provides storage for nearly all commercial and open source GIS product, Oracle Spatial (my personal specialty) provides many of the analytic functions provided by GIS vendors, Oracle MapViewer provides a basic visualization tool. No input/update tool though. Locator is available in every edition of 10gR2 and 11gR2 including Express Edition, and Spatial extends that included in Personal Edition, or as an option in Enterprise Edition.
A lot of people overlook Personal Edition. It's a singe-user developer's DB, includes all features and enteprise edition options except RAC and EM related extensions. Only available for Windows, though. Target community - developers who actually want to have support and perhaps develop things 'right'.
