Thanks to all for feedback - got some stuff there I'm filing away for future reference.

I managed to talk the user into being happy with a permanent retention tape backup of the database and in the event that she ever wants it in SQL Server (which is what's likely to happen on day), I'll restore the database to disk and use the SQL Server Migration Assistant from Microsoft to convert it over.
