They would get an error message.
Doing this while the database is online and applications are active is dependent on the probability that the application code would not try to touch the corrupted blocks/files. It is a judgement call, but if in doubt, anticipate having to request downtime for the entire application(s) during any restore operations.

Oracle says you can recover individual blocks or datafiles while the database is online. Does that mean you can leave a front-end application connected to the database?
