Brian,

There are a number of databases here that we are required to verify the recoverability thereof every 6 months. It's part of our SOX compliance requirements and our auditors do check up on us. So yes we have sufficient space on out test/dev servers to restore a copy of production thereon. Basically we ask operations to restore the backup directories (we use RMAN to disk for backups) onto the dev/test server and then we restore and recover the database. Besides being a test of the complete backup process it's also good practice, especially in some of those parts of RMAN that you may not have played with in the past, like set newname, recover from autobackup, etc..... OH, yes we also have to document that our test was successful and file that with QM.

Ok, we just got hit with a "Are you testing your backups?" from senior administration. We sometimes use copies to replace test or dev but they want a scheduled plan. The first thing I mentioned was do you have enough space(some db's are over a 1T)? Do you have matching hardware sitting around that I can drop my db's onto? Licensing $$$$? What do you as a community do to satisfy or comply with this? ciao,
Brian
