I used spotlight quite a bit (unix and oracle) 10 years ago. Spotlight became non-functional once a production issue occurred. When a production issue occurred spotlight became a victim since all the repositories were maintained in the database (usually I'd go back to tried and true: OS, sqlplus. I found latency when drilling down in spotlight problematic at best. Granted this was 10 years ago. I did not try foglight because I had already been biased by spotlight. They do provide trial versions the last I checked.

Rich, I hadn't heard of those issues. Do you have any bug#'s I could check related to them? Also, for the checker script you use, would you be willing to share any details on it?
We haven't run into any of the issues you mentioned, but then again if at some time a job was found not running anymore, more than likely a lower-level DBA got blamed unjustly.

I'm happy to see that you've not hit bugs where GC jobs fail to initialize or worse yet, just silently disappear. Support was not able to explain it nor offer any help, so I created a script to verify the status of GC jobs.
I've since dropped all but one of my GC jobs, but still run my job checker script (via cron) against the repository every 30 minutes.
