Hi Robert,

We leverage Nagios, Net-SNMP and several Nagios plugins to monitor our network of Linux, FreeBSD, AIX, Solaris, ESX and Windows hosts plus our MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and SQL Server databases. We also use the same Nagios setup to monitor our Cisco and APC equipements and a whole bunch of other software such as Tomcat, JBoss, sendmail, BIND, etc.

Take a look at this thread on the same subject:

We had a demo from the Splunk guys here at work and it looks very interesting. A member of my team has then started using the free version of Splunk just to see if it was worth the investment. The first thing that came out is that very steep learning curve. The tool is very powerful, but in order to harness this power, one must learn how to use it. And this can prove challenging. But IMHO it's worh it.
