statistical analysis tools

I'm trying to do some analysis of stats from ASH. IE statistically throw out the ones that are meaningless or at least not very meaningful and get the top issues. I'm looking at tools like R and dataplot and ggplot. If you've used something like this and could give me some advice I'd appreciate it. I've tried out R and ggplot and I seem to have my data in entirely the wrong format. Ya know Oracle tablular format. It's possible that I'm so close to the fire that I can't see the flames for the smoke. Thanks in advance.
